Bomond is a company that specializes in selling premium-brand perfumes and makeup. It is one of the biggest Ukrainian companies of this kind. Obviously, such company requires presentable website so that the users not only could get premium products but also premium user experience.
Bomond's first official online store was launched in 2013 by our company - it is one of our biggest and longest-running projects. We also provided support and refined the features to match the ever-changing trends of the eCommerce market segment.
In 2017, we began the complete overhaul of the store. We needed to renovate the website’s frontend and backend, so that the platform would integrate easily and seamlessly with the accounting systems. Since the online store was one of the elements of the business operation of the company - it needed to be synchronized and optimized with the rest of the elements.
It was a challenging task in many ways. Not only it was a big project that required extensive and thorough planning, but we also had to update the project in such way that current users would only notice improved UX and UI (instead of tech problems).
Overall, we did several things: we audited the existing platform, chose a new one based on new requirements, built optimal site architecture to make the shop scalable, migrated the mammoth to cloud, and integrated with business operations.
Site Engine Update
When Bomond online shop was initially developed in 2013, it used custom-made site engine. For that moment, it was the best solution and it served well for years. Eventually, it became apparent that it was increasingly hard to support and keep up with the ever-changing eCommerce trends and needs of the customers.
Our foremost task was to find a more cost-effective solution. We needed to find effective site engine that would be easier to maintain and with simple integration of the new elements.
After a swift research, we decided to use Magento eCommerce platform as it was the most flexible option currently available on the market. It offers a lot of built-in functionality as well as numerous add-on plugins that are created specifically for streamlining the ecommerce processes and integration with third-party platforms.
Brand New Site Architecture
Considering the features audit we have done previously, we rebuilt the website’s architecture, taking the best elements of the then-current site and combined it with the new ones in order to create more effective and streamlined structure.
Our goal was to make the site more engaging and easier to use on both sides — for the support personnel (sales managers, content managers, etc) and, most importantly, the customers.
The frontend of the website was renovated in order to make it more user-friendly, optimized for mobile phones with functions highlighting various special offers.
Data Transfer & Cloud Migration
From the technical point of view, the biggest challenge was to transfer all the data. While the process itself was not a big deal — the sheer amount of information that we needed to transfer was humongous (several terabytes of data.)
The site had amassed an extensive database that needed to be transferred smoothly without breaking the workflow of the store. In order to do that our team had developed custom scripts for importing data to the new platform.
Besides transfering the data from old website to new, we also migrated the entire project to Google Cloud to ensure the balance of maintaining smooth transition and scalability.
New Design & Mobile Optimization
Another challenge was to figure out effective design scheme for the website. While the old design worked just fine, it wasn’t up to date with the current eCommerce trends. Because of that, we decided to make a little aesthetic shake-up.
During that process, we rearranged the entire design scheme so that the user experience would be intuitive. This process required thorough usability testing in order to figure out the optimal approach.
We minimized the number of steps required to make a purchase. We also completely overhauled search console so that it would provide more flexible results based both on the keywords and suggestions based on user prior behavior on site.
We also made sure the design was mobile-friendly, considering the fact that people shop on the go more and more these days.
Integration into Business Operations
In many ways - integration of the eCommerce platform is a challenge of its own kind. We needed to tie together online store and the client’s accounting, payment, and logistics systems. Not only that but we also needed to do that without breaking the regular workflow of the business operation.
The whole process included integration of the data exchange of the following processes:
We used Magento as the foundation of the store. It integrates both physical and digital experiences and helps both customers and employees of the ecommerce business.
PHP Symfony was used for the additional import-export scripts.
Our team consisted of:
This project holds a special place in our hearts. During the initial development, we had learned a lot about eCommerce. Since then our team came up with more sophisticated and effective solutions.
Because of that, the latter-day site overhaul was something of a self-evaluation and subsequent revision based on current experience. We decided to prove ourselves that we can out best our own project.
The platform was completely overhauled with extensive database transferred without missing a beat or causing any operational downtime. Bomond ecommerce store is now running smoothly. The project is now in the support stage of development, while new features are being gradually developed and implemented.
